What is coaching?

Coaching is a process in which the coach guides the coachee based on their trust in the approach they believe is right for the given situation and conversations. In the process the coach supports the coachee to have their a-has to figure out the next right action of integrity for them.

The coach assists the coachee in defining and achieving their development objectives, strengthens the client’s confidence in their ability to figure things out, to navigate situations in the best possible way and allow the coachee to work with their own processes. Coaching process focuses on client’s:

 1) Thinking & Thoughts

 2) Feeling & Emotions

 3) Behavior & Actions

What makes a great coach?

There are many attributes of a great coach. I’d like to share a few of them, which I find being most important. A great coach is fully present in the coaching session, compassionate, she/he is the one who is interested in the coachee’s life, their thoughts and challenges. The coach is naturally willing in trying to facilitate the coaching process into the direction where coachee can create their own a-ha and magic and make decisions that will lead to next right action of integrity for them.

One of the most important roles and skills of a great coach is to help people see and move beyond their current situations. We all have moments in life when we feel that we’re stuck and cannot see beyond the current moment, or don’t know what would be the best right action to do. In these moments it is often empowering to have someone who knows how to lead you from the unclear situation towards the vision beyond. Often, we might notice the onset of misery or dissatisfaction.

The professional coach is the one who believes the client, no matter what, the coach is paid for his/her ability to challenge the client towards the next right action of integrity. Coach’s role is to be a cheerleader tor the client.

Coach’s mindset

The coach’s mindset describes how the coach concretely relates to the coachee during the coaching session. Four essential coaching mindsets are: listening, establishing connection, self-control, and curiosity. The coach’s mindset particularly reflects belief in the coachee’s resources and respect for the coachee’s grand plan.

A coach who doesn’t care about their own mindset may succeed in their coaching to some extent, but it’s likely that the coaching dialogue remains superficial, resulting in fewer insights.

The right mindset creates a deeper connection between the coach and the coachee, fostering trust.

Why people seek coaching?

As mentioned earlier, seeking overall clarity is one of the primary motivations for individuals to seek support from a personal coach.

People may desire a comprehensive transformation in their lives, encompassing guidance on career goals, transitions, leadership development, relationship or workplace challenges, relocations, decision-making, stress management, pursuit of improved health or wealth and the cultivation of self-esteem or confidence.

Motivations for seeking coaching can vary widely, and individuals often find coaching beneficial for simultaneously improving multiple aspects of their lives. This holistic approach is driven by a desire for overall satisfaction, leading to shifts and changes in one’s life direction, habits, attitude, feeling of control, and mindset.

The coach will keep the focus on the following potential changes:

  1. From Aimlessness to Purposeful
  2. From Problems to Solutions
  3. From Lack to Resourcefulness
  4. From Weaknesses to Strengths
  5. From Irresponsibility to Responsibility
  6. From Unchanging to Growth

When people are empowered, they again start to notice everything that is already good, or great, in their lives. The importance of the current challenging situation usually decreases when there is an inspiring vision for beyond.

”Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.”
